Trailer Hitches

A  trailer won’t get you very far without a proper trailer hitch to pull it. The type of hitch you buy depends on the vehicle you plan to use to haul your trailer, plus the size and weight capacity of the trailer itself. Our knowledgeable staff can discuss your trailer needs with you to determine what kind of trailer and hitch you need to get the job done.

Trailer hitch capacities by vehicle type

Any vehicle can be outfitted with a trailer hitch, but not every vehicle can pull the same size load. Here are some general guidelines for what you can expect from your vehicle before you buy a trailer and trailer hitch.

Class 1 Vehicles

Class 1 vehicles include subcompact and compact cars, full-size cars and sedans, and crossover SUVs. These vehicles can tow up to 2,000 pounds using a trailer.

Class 2 Vehicles

Class 2 vehicles include full-size cars and sedans, crossover SUVs, minivans, and quarter-ton trucks and SUVs. These vehicles can pull up to an additional 3,500 pounds on a trailer.

Class 3 Vehicles

Class 3 vehicles include crossover SUVs, minivans, quarter-ton trucks and SUVs, half-ton trucks and SUVs, three-quarter-ton trucks, and 1-ton trucks and flatbeds. These vehicles can handle between 3,500 and 12,000 pounds of additional weight on a trailer.

Class 4 & 5 Vehicles

Class 4 & 5 vehicles include half-ton trucks and SUVs, three-quarter-ton trucks, and 1-ton trucks and flatbeds. Class 4s can pull between 8,000 and 14,000 pounds and class 5s can handle 16,000 to 20,000 pounds of additional weight.
